Apollo / Pulcinella
The choreographies of George Balanchine and Blanca Li bring Igor Stravinsky's creations to the family audience
Apollo by George Balanchine
Apollo, Balanchine's first collaboration with Stravinsky and one of his earliest world successes, introduces the young god and his arrival in the adult world at the hands of the muses of poetry, mime, and dance. Created by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, the 1928 premiere featured costumes and scenery by French painter André Bauchant and in 1929 Coco Chanel created new costumes. Throughout his life, Balanchine continued to supervise the work, reducing scenery, costumes, and much of the narrative content of the ballet.
Pulcinella, by Blanca Li
When Joaquín De Luz called me to invite me to create a new version of Pulcinella for the National Dance Company, the idea excited me. Stravinsky is one of my favorite composers and Pulcinella is a multi-textured work. It has light and color and, what I like the most, it is cheerful and full of energy. The fact that our first audience is a family audience is very important to me. I have been working for years to bring dance closer to children and young people, it is an audience that I adore and respect. Pulcinella seems to me to be a piece open to all audiences due to its musical richness, beauty and energy.
